We were awarded a Wellcome Research Enrichment – Public Engagement grant for a 2-year public engagement and impact project.
Transformations explores the history of gender and science with young trans and gender diverse people (aged 16-25). The project asks questions about medicine, identity, and authority through creative workshops, oral history research, creative writing, and performance.
We had to change our plans with the pandemic, and the stage show became a drama podcast, Adventures in Time and Gender written by Jason Barker, directed by Krishna Istha and featuring a cast of trans and non-binary performers, musicians and sound designers. We also worked with They Them Studio to create this website and asked trans and gender-diverse artists and writers to contribute their creative responses. Read the project evaluation here.
Adventures in Time and Gender has expanded with More Adventures, a therapeutic resource consisting of a collection of themed conversation prompts, exercises, images, historical maeterial and oral histories to stimulate explorations of gender and reflections on being trans.
This project is a collaboration between artist Jason Barker, designer Zed, therapist Amanda Middleton Gendered Intelligence, the University of Portsmouth, the Rethinking Sexology project, and the University of Exeter.
